Nigel Thompson was working in the South Tower when the first plane hit the North Tower. He and his colleagues made their way down more than 70 floors, only to be caught in the collapse of the South Tower. Thompson was buried in the rubble for nearly 24 hours before he was rescued.
Thompson recalled the moment the South Tower collapsed: “I remember looking up and seeing the building start to come down on top of me and my colleagues. I remember thinking, ‘This is it. I’m going to die.’ And then everything went black.”
Thompson was one of the lucky ones. He survived the collapse and was rescued by first responders. But he still bears the physical and emotional scars of that day.
Brian Clark was also in the South Tower when the first plane hit. He made his way down to the 78th floor, where he and his colleagues were trapped. Clark recalled the terror he felt as he realized they were going to die.

Clark and his colleagues were eventually rescued, but not before he witnessed the horrific death of a young woman who was crushed by falling debris.
First responders also faced unimaginable horrors on September 11. FDNY firefighter Mike Meyers was on the scene within minutes of the first plane hitting the North Tower. He and his colleagues raced up the stairs to rescue people trapped in the burning building.
“It was complete chaos,” Meyers recalled. “People were jumping out of the building, and the debris was falling down around us. I remember thinking, ‘This is it. We’re all going to die.'”
